Cash for Clunkers in Florida
The Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS), commonly known as ‘Cash For Clunkers’, is a government sponsored program which aims to help Americans buy new cars and tracks. When you trade in your old vehicle, you will receive a credit of £3,500 or $4,500 toward a new, fuel-efficient car.
Most people know that not all old vehicles qualify and in order to receive the credit your vehicle must meet certain age and gas consumption criteria.
What the majority of people don’t know however, is that your vehicle must also have been insured for the previous 12 months.
This means that people who have been driving without auto insurance in Florida or have stored their non running vehicles without registration tag and auto insurance, will not be able to participate in the program.
If your insurance card does not cover the entire year preceding the trade in, you will need other proof of insurance. Contact your insurance company to get evidence of 1 year worth of insurance. The form must include, at a minimum, the insurance company, policy number, VIN, start and end date of insurance (showing at least 1 year).
For those who have cars or tracks which otherwise qualify for the ‘Cash For Clunkers’ program, this auto insurance rule may seem unfair.
The program is scheduled to last until either November 1 or whenever the funds run out.
